What Is A Calming Area?


A calming area in a kindergarten classroom is an area that is located away from high-traffic areas such as blocks and dramatic play. It is an area where students can have a quiet moment; it is comfy and equipped with tools that aid in re-centering students who are dysregulated. A calming area functions as a reset area where students can feel safe.






Creating A Calming Area

In my kindergarten classroom, our calming area is next to our book nook. It has pillows, stuffies, a blanket, a wiggly cousin, and even a weighted snake. These items, in conjunction with the Pip the Pineapple emotion bulletin board, provide my students with an area for them to calm down, recharge, and relax.
